Visit to the European Parliament
Wouter Beke, MEP for the CD&V and member of the European People's Party group, was elected today as president of the European Movement in Belgium. "In uncertain times, let us unite young and old around a Europe that protects and unites," he declared.
The European Movement in Belgium is the national section of the European Movement International. It works for a strong, united, and democratic Europe by bringing together citizens, organizations, and decision-makers around the European project and the shared values of the Union.
With the election of Wouter Beke, the Movement has chosen a president with extensive experience at local, regional (Flemish) and European levels, and a strong commitment to European cooperation.
"The European project deserves an active defence today more than ever. In a world full of uncertainty, Europe provides answers and offers the best protection in terms of security, prosperity, and shared values. As president, I also want to connect generations and unite young and old around this common project. This is how we will build a Europe that protects and unites. I look forward to taking on this challenge, surrounded by a strong team," said Wouter Beke.
"We are proud that Wouter Beke is joining the European Movement. Just look at the news: our future will be European – or it will not be", added Ruben Lombaert, Secretary General.
This election comes at a pivotal moment: trust in the European Union is at its highest level in 18 years, while concerns about security and geopolitical tensions continue to grow. For the European Movement in Belgium, this is the ideal moment to deepen the public debate on European integration and involve citizens of all ages.
Wouter Beke brings not only political experience but also a resolutely pro-European outlook. As a member of the largest European political group, he benefits from an extensive network within the EU institutions.

On this #EuropeDay, we remember the Schuman Declaration of 1950, a groundbreaking moment in European integration. Robert Schuman's vision of peace and cooperation remains relevant today, reminding us that cooperation is the key to a stronger and more resilient Europe.
The European Movement in Belgium organized a walking tour at the European Quarter. We started from the Simone Veil esplanade, then we reached the Solidarnosc esplanade and the Place du Luxembourg. During this part of the visit; we talked about Simone Veil and her role within the European Union, farmers’ protests and the damaged statues. We followed the Rue du Luxembourg to the Place de Meeûs, where we discussed the Renaissance hotel and the “Rendez-Vous” houses. We headed towards the European Parliament via Wiertz Street, where the Spinelli and Paul-Henri Spaak buildings are located, there are part of the European Parliament. We walked along the Citizen’s Garden. Not far from there are the Wiertz Museum and the Museum of Natural Sciences. We discussed Antoine Wiertz, a Belgian painter, we also discussed the Iguanodons of Bernissart, the discovery of which was made for the first time in the UK. After this stop, we went to Parc Léopold where the Eastman building is located, also called the House of European History and the Solvay Library. Here we discussed the Animal Garden present in this park until 1877. Leaving the Léopold Park we saw the Sofitel hotel which was once a famous bakery. We subsequently went to the Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions, and then we went to the European Flame and the Church of the International Communities in Brussels. We continued our route to the Council of the European Union, and then via Rue Schuman to the Council of Europe. We saw the Garden of the Maelbeek Valley and continued our way along Rue de la Loi to discover the European External Action Service. As we headed to one of our last stops we saw the bust of Robert Schuman. We continued to the Parc du Cinquantenaire in which the Royal Museum of Art and History is located. We finished our visit at Maison Cauchie, just around the corner from Parc du Cinquantenaire.
